Ada's Story

Ada Marie Howard, age 91, of Elkhart, passed away on Friday September 15, 2017. Ada Marie was born to Wes McCracken and Ruby (Kyle) McCracken on August 19, 1926. She was a loving wife to her husband Billy Gene Howard who preceded her in death in 1978.
Ada Marie attended Elkhart schools and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1942. That summer she attended a business school in Tyler, TX. After completion, she moved to Houston and worked for the Houston Ship Channel. After WWII she changed employment to Dow Welding Supply and continued working there until the birth of her son Billy Gene Howard, Jr.
While working at Dow Welding Supply and living in a boarding house she met her husband to be, Billy Gene Howard, a naval veteran of WWII, who was studying engineering at University of Houston. Billy was recalled to active duty for the Korean war. One week prior to deployment they married at an aunt and uncles house in Elkhart. After being discharged her husband returned to Houston and completed his degree in industrial engineering. Upon completion of his degree Billy went to work at Cameron Iron Works in Houston. At that time Ada Marie's salary was more than double that of her husband's starting salary. She continued working at Dow Welding Supply until the birth of her son. She never returned to the work force but instead devoted her life to her family in Houston, Elkhart, Oklahoma and Missouri, along with her husband's in Ennis, TX. Her priorities in life were family, friends and community, She moved back to the family farm in 1983 and resided there until her death.
Ada Marie is preceded in death by her parents, Wes McCracken and Ruby (Kyle) McCracken, her husband, Billy Gene Howard and numerous aunts and uncles. At the time of her husband's death he was still with Cameron Iron Works and was Chief Industrial Engineer Ball Vale worldwide which included the United States, Scotland and France.
She is survived by son Billy Gene Howard, Jr. of Elkhart, grandson Chris Howard of Belton, TX., great granddaughter Ashley Marie Howard, of Arp, TX. and many cousins.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Pilgrim Cemetery at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 23, 2017. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a school of your choice, community college, university, or Elkhart Independent School District in Ada's name. This would carry forward her passion of education of which she was never able to enjoy the rewards herself. She assisted in completed university degrees of her husband, son, grandson and has set aside the means for her great granddaughter.
