Dr. Peter Andrew Kolstad, Jr.

Dr. Peter Andrew Kolstad, Jr. was born March 5, 1923 in Palestine, Texas to Dr. Peter Andrew Kolstad, Sr. and Luella Posey Gardner. He passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019, in his home of many years, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Kolstad graduated from Palestine High School in 1940, after serving as senior class president. He went on to major in business administration at The University of Texas at Austin before entering the U. S. Army in 1943. While serving as a staff sergeant during World War II, he met the love of his life, Dottie. The two were married one month after his honorable discharge in 1946. Dr. Kolstad continued his education at Northern Illinois College of Optometry where he received his Doctor of Optometry in 1948. He then returned to Palestine and went into practice with his father, "Mr. Drew". After faithfully serving his patients for over 50 years, he retired in 1999. In his younger years, he was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for duck hunting. He was a member, and served as president, of the Palestine Lions Club. Proudly, he was also a longtime active member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. A sweet, simple man devoted to family and friends, with his greatest pleasure in spending time with his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Howard Kolstad Hanks, son Judge John Christopher Kolstad, and infant granddaughter Kristen Cloud Kolstad. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Dorothy Ondus Kolstad; daughter Luella and husband Dr. Ron Stevener; granddaughters Misty Lindsay and husband Josh, Marcy Hays and husband Michael, Abbey Stevener - Tharpe, Laura Blanchard and husband Joel; daughter-in-law Mary Kolstad and grandson Jonathan Weaver. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren. Dr. Kolstad was a member of an early pioneer family whom established their roots in Palestine in the 1850s, with two of his ancestors being Judge Benjamin Howard Gardner and Soren Pedersen Kolstad.

I have such fond memories of Dr. Kolstad. Got my first pair of glasses from him when I was 7. He had an office in Rusk once a week. He and my mom and dad were such good friends. He was one of the sweetest men I have ever known. Saw him in recent years at the Nail salon. He would get pedicures with his daughter. RIP sweet man. Gone but not forgotten. Praying for you Luella and your mom and family.
