Services for Floyd Ferdinand Barthel age 96, of Palestine will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday February 18, 2017 at Bailey & Foster Chapel with David English officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Barthel passed away on Monday February 13, 2017 at Trucare Living Center. He was born July 28, 1920 in Palestine to Gideon Henry and Minnie Belle Douthit Barthel. He married Janie Lou Pennington on May 7, 1943 in Southside Baptist Church. They were married 61 years. Mr. Barthel worked for the railroad in Houston and Palestine for 40 years. He then drove a mail truck for 10 more years. He also farmed and raised cattle and pigs. Mr. Barthel was a member of Southside Baptist Church from the beginning. He served in the US Army during WWII with Patton and in occupation force in the Philippines.
Mr. Barthel was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Janie Lou Barthel in 2004. He is survived by his two daughters, Sandra Jean Dempsey and husband Mac Dempsey and Cheryl Anne Smart and husband Ernie Smartt, ten grandchildren, Tammy Rusch and husband Andy, Christina Smartt, Alex Dempsey, Carissa Harn and husband Bennie, Courtney Pruitt and husband Andrew, Cynthia Villaverde and husband Jorge, Jonathan Dempsey, Robert Dempsey and wife Sabrina, Jeremiah Smartt and Rebekah Smartt, twenty one great grandchildren, Brian, Andrew, Joshua, and Shelby Rusch, Jacob and Chance Dempsey, Jack and Aaron Harn, William and Matthew Pruitt, Sophia and Gabriel Villaverde, Cason, Bethany, Christopher, and Cody Thomas, Samantha, Nathaniel, JJ and Christopher Smartt and Gavin Smartt.
Pallbearers will be Robert Dempsey, Ben Harn, Andrew Pruitt, Charlie Richardson, Larry Thomas and Kenneth Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Mac Dempsey, Ernie Smartt, and Alex Dempsey.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.
