Gary Neil Maas, age 62, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at his home in Palestine, TX. Visitation will be from 5:30pm until 7:30pm on Friday, the 22nd day of September, 2017 at Rhone Funeral Home. A remembrance and celebration of Gary Maas's life will be conducted at 6:30pm in the Reflection Room of Rhone Funeral Home. Gary's final resting and burial will be held in Byson City, NC.
Gary was born on December 26, 1954 in Grand Prairie, TX, where the family lived a short period of time. They returned to the Waco/Bellmead area where he attended LaVega High School subsequently enlisting in the U. S. Army with active duty service from 1972-1975. Waco was home until his relocation to Palestine in 2000.
Gary worked for Coastal Transport Company for many years before joining the Walmart family on August 29, 1994. He spent the last 23 years employed at the Walmart Distribution Center in Palestine. He was well versed on every road and mile marker throughout Texas as well as other states having driven over 2.79 million total miles with Walmart of which over 900,000 were safe miles. Gary was a gentleman in every respect but also very opinionated whether it was driving, the Cowboys, baseball or politics ... not necessarily in that order.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur H. and Eddie Mae Piel Maas, and his beloved Kitty Roberts Maas. Survivors include step-son, Tim and Jen Roberts of Cashiers, NC; brother, Ross W. Maas of Riesel; sisters, John and Brenda Gochenour of Killeen and Mike and Karen Jones of San Antonio; granddaughters, Sydney and Madison Roberts filled his heart; niece and nephews, Jason Freeman of Houston, Kristina Gochenour of Killeen, and Terry Joe Maas of Waco. Numerous cousins and extended family are also saddened by his loss.
The family extends its gratitude to the Walmart family and many friends and neighbors who loved Gary and enriched his life. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the victims of Hurricane Harvey or the charity of your choice.
Services are in care of Rhone Funeral Home, 3900 S. State Hwy 19, Palestine, Texas. To view online, leave condolences or sign the guestbook, go to www.rhonefuneralhome.com.
