Gerald Louis Kerr, age 71, of Palestine, Texas passed away on Saturday, the 10th of June, 2017 in Tyler, Texas. Gerald Kerr, known to his family as "Jerry", his postal service friends as "Gerald" and his Sheriff's Office friends as "GK" was born in Lufkin, Texas on the 4th of September, 1945 to Darwin and Ernestine Kerr. Upon graduation from high school, Gerald joined the United States Navy and served from 1964 until his honorable discharge in 1968, during the Vietnam Conflict. Upon returning to "civilian life" he worked for a short time at Southland Paper Mills before joining the United States Postal Service where he worked until his retirement as Palestine Post Master in 1995. He joined the Anderson County Sheriff's Office in 1992 as a "Reserve Officer" and upon his retirement from the Postal Service he joined the Sheriff's Office as a Narcotics Investigator with the Dogwood Trails Narcotic Task Force. He retired from the Sheriff's Office in 2014, as a Patrol Sergeant, after serving Anderson County Citizens for 23 years. He was a Christian, and a member of the Eastside Church of Christ in Palestine, Texas.
Mr. Kerr is preceded in death by his parents, Darwin and Ernestine Kerr; his grandparents, Ernest and Emma Gipson, Shade and Edna Kerr, all of Lufkin, Texas; two older brothers, Michael D. Kerr of Nederland, Texas and Andrew R. Kerr of Conroe, Texas.
Gerald Kerr is survived by his wife of 51 years, Theresa Kerr; one daughter, Phylesa Lasiter and husband Richard of Elkhart, Texas; one son, Gregory Kerr and wife Morgan of Palestine, Texas; brother, Karl Kerr of Nacogdoches, Texas; grandsons, Matthew Jordan Kerr and wife Amy of Elkhart, Texas, Trenton Lasiter of Elkhart, Texas, and Ayden Cole of Palestine, Texas; great grandchildren, Caden Andrew Kerr and Kinley Grace Kerr of Elkhart, Texas and Charlee Lynn Lasiter of Elkhart, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 13th of June, in the parlor and reflection room of Rhone Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be conducted at half-passed ten o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 14th of June, 2017 in the Rhone Memorial Chapel with Bruce James officiating.
Mr. Kerr will be cremated afterwards and the family will have a private burial at a later date.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Matthew Kerr, Richard Lasiter, Phillip Kerr, John Kerr, Mark Kerr and James Kerr.
