Joel's Story

Text size

Joel "Tiny" Parish was a man of great stature. He passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017. He was born September 9, 1950 to Don and Frances Parish in East Texas and resided in Huntington, TX, Houston, TX, Bay City, TX, and Palestine, TX. He was married to Deborah Sue Parish until her death in November 6, 2006 and they had three children Joel Clayton, April Dawn, and Daniel Wayne. Survivors include his children Clayton Parish and wife Tammy Parish, April Henry and husband Daniel Henry, and Daniel Parish; close friends Troy and Carrie Case; and grandchildren, Sara Parish, Brooke Lewis, Daniel Darrell, Madison Henry and Dillon Henry; his brother David Parish and his wife Libby, their son Kyle; also, sister-in-law Susan McPherson, her son David and daughter Tammelia Mohamed; and many more nieces and nephews and family members from across East Texas.
Tiny was a simple man and believed in simple things. He was a heavy equipment operator and rigger, welder, and a truck driver of various truck tractors from over the road to dump trucks and grocery delivery. Tiny was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing.
In 1966, he became a volunteer firefighter in the Houston suburb of Cloverleaf and served there for many years until he and his family moved to Palestine. In 1995, he became a member of the Montalba VFD and in 1998 he became Chief of Montalba VFD and has served the community with great pride and dedication. He provided a clear path and the leadership for the fire department and with the help of others, brought it to where it is today. Chief was a visionary when it came to the fire service and when he didn't agree with something or something upset him, believe me he would ROAR.
Tiny was a spiritual man and a man full of spirit though he served his Lord and Savior in a way that provided comfort to a community and for himself. His spirit today is all around us and he's smiling upon us knowing that it will always be there. He wants us to celebrate life as he always did.
