John Collier Thomas was born on July 17, 1932 in Anderson County where he also passed at the age of 85 on Monday, October 2, 2017. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He married his forever love, Betty Charlene Parks in 1954 and together they traveled the world as he served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany, the Azores, and the Philippines. He retired in 1971 at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. They moved back home to Palestine in 1975 where he began his twenty year career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. When he retired he spent most of his time doing what he loved: farming, gardening, taking care of his animals, and driving his tractor. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Thomas of 64 years, his daughter Diane (Thomas) Calhoun, his son Eddie Thomas, two sisters, and a brother.
John is survived by his son Bobby Thomas of Kerens, his daughter Tasha (Thomas) Pace and husband Michael of Palestine, his grandchildren: Michael Hickey, Lisa (Thomas) Milne, Jimmy Thomas, Johnny Thomas, Casey (Thomas) Turnbo, Shelby (Thomas) Prescott, Christian Lewallen, and Emily Lewallen, along with nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services for Mr. Thomas are scheduled for 11 AM on Friday, October 6, 2017, at Chapel of the Air at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
