Joseph's Story

Text size

Joseph Michael "Mike" Ricketts passed away August 7, 2017, after a struggle with cirrhosis of the liver. He lived the last few months, as he did the entirety of his life, surrounded by family and friends.
Mike was born in Clinton, Oklahoma on January 9, 1947 and spent most of his childhood years in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.
He graduated from Tascosa High School in Amarillo, TX in 1965 and Texas Tech University in December of 1969, where he joined Kappa Alpha Order fraternity.
Mike joined the US Army in February 1970 and was sent to Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, VA. He graduated at the top of his class and was given his choice of jobs; a courier position in Washington, DC. Upon discharge, he worked for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for 9 years and then as a Special Agent for 32 years, retiring in 2011.
Mike married Mary McClellen in 1972 and had two children, Megan and Matthew, who became the center of their world. Mike volunteered as the coach for many of Matthew's sports teams, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and PTA. He was always the children's biggest cheerleader.
Mike remarried in 2005 to Patricia Hunt, whom he had dated in college and remained friends with over the years.
Mike leaves behind three grandchildren whom he loved to no end. He was one of their biggest fans watching them from the sidelines of games, taking them on cruises, and just spending time at home with them.
Since retirement, he has enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world with Trish, as well as being one of Santa's helpers to children all over the Houston area.
They had recently moved into their log home near Palestine to enjoy their quiet years together.
We would like to extend our warm thanks to the Dallas Methodist hospital 4th floor transplant wing and ICU department for the amazing care given to Mike and his family.
Mike is survived by his wife Trish, son Matthew, daughter Megan, son-in-law Randy, and grandchildren Tyler, Haley, and Paige. He also leaves behind his brother Tim, Uncle Fred, Aunt Sybil, cousins Kenneth, Gayla, and Bob, stepchildren Travis, Brandon, and Sarah, step-grandchildren Ajurae, Merrick, and Kalvin, and his many brothers from Kappa Alpha and Officer Candidate School.
He is predeceased by his wife Mary and parents, Walter and Nelle.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on August 19, 2017 at 1pm at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 9600 S. Gessner Houston, TX with a reception following. Mike was never too fond of suits and ties, preferring a good Hawaiian shirt. We encourage everyone to celebrate his life by wearing their favorite Hawaiian shirt.
Memorial donations may be made to Mike's loves - baseball and Montalba.
