Garnet Marjorie Smith died on December 23, 2017, at age 92, in Palestine, Texas where she was a long-time resident. She was born on January 14, 1925, to Mamie and Robert Kasselhut on her family's farm near Wathena, Kansas, and was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church near Wathena.
She graduated from high school in Wathena and attended business college in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she was then employed as a secretary and met Gilbert Smith, who was serving in the Army. They were married in 1944. After raising two daughters in St. Joseph, where they were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, they moved to several locations before settling in Palestine, Texas.
She served as office manager for 15 years at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Palestine in addition to other church-related service including playing the organ, altar guild, pre-school teacher, and newsletter editor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Smith, her parents, her brother Leonard Kasselhut, her infant sister Dell Marie, and her daughter Constance Marie Smith. Marjorie is survived by her daughter Gail (David) Gawenda of Madison, WI, grandchildren Whitney Gawenda and Alexander Gawenda of Chicago, and Lynnette (Mike) Berry of Kansas City as well as four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on Friday, January 5, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Palestine, Rev. David Adler officiating, with visitation the previous evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home in Palestine. Burial will be in St. Joseph, Missouri at a later date.
