Michael Holmes Memorial services for George W. (Michael) Holmes, 79 formerly of Palestine, will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home Chapel Palestine, with The Reverend Ted Welty officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey & Foster Funeral Home Palestine.
George W. (Michael) Holmes, professional actor, brother and friend left the stage on November 16th, 2018. Michael was born in Palestine, Texas, June 29, 1939, to George W. Holmes and Marion Wolford Holmes who predeceased him. He began his acting career while a student in Palestine, class of '57 at the Alley Theatre traveling to Houston to perform in The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker. He studied drama at The University of Texas then moved to New York City where he won a Tony Award for his performance as Hamlet in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. After a successful career on Broadway he moved to Los Angeles where he continued to perform on stage, screen and TV. Michael opened Chandler Studio in Los Angeles and served as Artistic director. As an adjunct professor at UCLA, he gained a reputation as an outstanding teacher through his Action/Reaction Company. A director and writer, he won L.A.'s Drama-Logue Critics Award several times. He remained an active member of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Michael is survived by his brothers Al Holmes & wife Betty, of Palestine and David Holmes & wife Judy of Wimberley and many nephews and nieces who loved and admired his talent and grit. Upon succumbing to pneumonia his nurse offered these words for him, "Go home now and rest with your father, Shakespeare."
