Richard's Story

Text size

Richard "Dick" Green, 87, of Palestine peacefully departed this life Tuesday in Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vivian Virginia Gordon of Palestine, 3 sons, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dale Green of Lufkin, William Rodney and Susanne Green of Nacogdoches, Randall Allen Green of New Braunfels, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Roy and Carol Gordon of Manchaca, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born July 6, 1930, in San Antonio, Richard is preceded in death by his mother, Gabrielle Amelie Figeac, a French immigrant, father Joseph Clarence Green, who served in the First Army Air Corp, and brothers Noble and René.

Richard was a member in the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He coached his sons' baseball teams and taught all his family how to hunt, fish, tend animals, and garden. Most of all, he shared an unsurpassed work ethic and sense of personal responsibility with his family.

Dick worked at Area 51 Groom Lake on the Lockheed Skunkworks project engineering the SR-71 Blackbird, as an auto mechanic, and ranch manager at Crescent Oak Farm before he retired to a peaceful life in Palestine with his wife. During frequent family gatherings, he would famously share his stories with an animated face and expressive blue eyes, making the world seem full of adventure with his unique storytelling. He knew no stranger, and visitors to his house often left as family- and an expert on bullet reloading. Often he had more energy than those in the room much younger than him. And even when his body began to fail him his mind remained sharp.

Dick's memory will live on through family and friends, name sakes, and his contributions to life.

Services are scheduled for 10 AM Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Chapel with Masonic graveside services following in Roselawn Park Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
