Thomas's Story

Text size

Thomas George Hassell, fondly known to most who loved him as Tommy or Pops, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday September 9, 2017. He was surrounded by many of the people that loved him at PRMC in Palestine, Texas.
Tommy was born in Frankston, Texas on March 29, 1940 to Clyde and Katie Bell Hassell. He graduated from PISD and went on to serve 2 years in the United State Army, and then worked at the Railroad, where he retired after 31 years of service.
Tommy was a God fearing man who loved to spend time with his family and friends. He loved to be outside, working cows, riding horses or sometimes just enjoying the day. He always had a quick wit or a funny joke just waiting to be told. He was the kind of man that is a rarity in this day and age. He lived a life of honor and integrity. His work was his bond. He would give the shirt off his back for someone in need. He made an impact on everyone he met, he just had a way about him that put people at ease. Tommy seemed to always find the good in everyone, or maybe he just brought out the best in others. You really couldn't help but love the man. There aren't enough words to describe the void that will be left with his passing. He will be sorely missed and greatly remembered.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Katie Bell Hassell, wife of 32 years, Willene Minnie Hassell, sister Lucy Hardin, daughters Mary Elizabeth Keen and Linda Collins, and his son Jimmy Wayne Keen.
He is survived by his brother Albert Hassell and wife Shearon, sister Cathrine Anderson, son Kenneth Keen and wife Kathy, daughter Patricia Hays, who affectionately called him Daddy, and husband Jimmy, son Danny Turner, as well as many grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews and other loved ones.
Condolence calls will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday September 14, 2017, at Bailey & Foster. Funeral services will take place at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home in Palestine, Texas on Friday September 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM, with burial to follow at Roselawn Park.
