Wanda Sue Hughes

Wanda Sue Wheeler Hughes passed away peacefully at her home in Carriage Inn, Lake Jackson, Texas on February 1, 2019. Sue was 79 years old, having been born at home in Hester Community, Oklahoma on April 10th, 1939. Sue was the fifth of six children in the Wheeler family.
Sue was a graduate of Mangum High School in 1957, and loved the high school reunions, participating in them as often as she could. She even passed away in a Mangum High School reunion T-shirt!
Sue married Howard Otis Hughes in 1956. They moved to the Brazosport, Texas area shortly after he finished college, and she welcomed three sons in the 1960s: Kevin Dean, born in 1963, Kerry Don in 1965, and Kelly Dale in 1967. Sue was a homemaker for many years, taking care of her three rascals, whom she loved profoundly. After her passing a handwritten note was found beside her easy chair that says it all: "I love my children." She was active at her son's schools, participating in the Parent Teacher Association and volunteering to help on many occasions.
The Hughes Family was a baseball family, and pretty much lived at Clute Little League baseball field during the season. Sue was the resident doctor, trainer, scorekeeper, concession stand worker, field maintenance technician, team mom, uniform repair specialist, loss counselor, and encourager. She also would "help" the umpires from time to time by vocalizing sound critiques of the finer points of the strike zone, particularly when it involved her sons. She was a proud owner of a "House Divided" Texas Ranger/Houston Astros t-shirt that her daughter-in-law made, attempting to strike a balance amongst the various allegiances shown within her family.
Sue was a hard worker, having grown up on a farm. Besides homemaking, she helped put her husband through college, substitute taught, worked at a car dealership and a title company while in the Brazosport Area.
The family moved to Elkhart Texas in 1981, and Sue worked for a local attorney and was employed for many years at Elkhart State Bank where many remember her people skills, smiling face, and helpful professionalism. She retired from the bank in 2004. She moved to Lake Jackson TX in 2014 to be nearer her two remaining school age grandchildren. There she was a faithful member of Hope Fellowship Church where she participated in the Truth Seekers Adult Bible Fellowship and helped her son teach the preschool Treehouse Tots class.
Sue is survived by her former husband, Howard Hughes; her sons & beloved daughters-in-law, Kevin & Stacy Hughes, Kerry & Ann Hughes, and Kelly & Debbie Hughes; her grandkids, Chris Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Garrett Hughes, Chad & Danae (Hughes) Pessarra, Reagan Hughes, Summer Hughes; and her great grandson, Jackson.
Sue's parents, Edgar and Alta Wheeler, went to be with the Lord before her, and Sue was the last surviving child of her brothers and sisters, having been preceded in death by Edgar, Reda, Donna, Joyce and Jerry. Also preceding Sue were her grandchildren Kody Hughes and Kallie Hughes. All of these, she so looked forward to being with in heaven.
A graveside service will be held at the old Pilgrim Church Cemetery in Elkhart, Texas, at 2 PM Saturday, February 9th, 2019. A visitation with the family and friends will begin an hour beforehand at 1 PM at the same location, which can be located at 1559 W FM 861, Elkhart TX 75839-5055 using MapQuest.
Friends, relatives, and church family are also invited to an open house celebrating Sue's life from 2-4 PM at the home of Kerry & Ann Hughes, 321 Huckleberry Dr. Lake Jackson TX 77566-4416 on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019.
