William Grady Cooper

December 02, 1946 - October 03, 2018

William (Bill) Grady Cooper was born in Rio Grande City, Texas on December 2, 1946, and was called home on October 3, 2018, surrounded by family and friends at Palestine Regional Hospice in Palestine, Texas, at the age of 71. He grew up in Rio Grande City and McAllen, Texas as a young boy and later moved to Carrizo Springs, Texas, where he met Phyllis.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon Carl Cooper and Alma Jean Parish Cooper Walker and his loving in-laws, Aubrey and Lorene Davis. He is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis. They were married on November 18, 1967, and spent 50 wonderful years together. His children, Shari Tucker Spangrud (Dale) from Canyon Lake, Texas, Christopher William (Jessica) from Copperas Cove, Texas, and Jeffrey Carlton from Palestine, Texas, were his pride and joy. He leaves 10 grandchildren, Brittany, Rebekah and Rachel Tucker, Bryan Spangrud, Portia and Coleton Cooper, Alton, Hope and Austin Cooper and Nevaeh Black, who adored their Bepaw, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and close family friends.
Besides his family, Bill was proudest of being a military veteran. He served in the U.S. Army from September 1966 to September 1970, completing basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, then was assigned to Asmara, Ethiopia and finally to Vint Hills Farm Station in Warrington, Virginia. He spent many years after his military service working in the oil fields in South Texas. In 1983, he moved his family to Palestine, Texas, as District Manager for Baker Oil Tools. After leaving Baker, he worked for Wal-Mart at the distribution center in Palestine and then later at the store as his health declined. He officially retired in November 2013.
Bill was a Christian and a member of the Palestine Church of Christ. He was active in his community serving two terms as a WISD School Board Trustee, a member of the WISD Athletic Booster club, coached with the ACYFL and PYAA baseball, and was loved by many of his childrens' friends, whom they affectionally called, Mr. Bill or Pops. He was a member of the NRA, loved Nascar and dirt track racing. He spent many Saturday nights at the local tracks with his son, Jeff.
There are many individuals who have cared for Bill over these last several years and the family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses at Palestine Regional, Mother Frances, ETMC, and Palestine Dialysis Center for their care.
Visitation will be Friday, October 5th from 6-8 pm and Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 6th at 2 pm, both at Herrington Funeral Home, burial immediately following at Land of Memory. Officiants and speakers will be Bobby Brunson, Eric Brunson, Dennis Wilson, and Shari Spangrud.
