Funeral Service for William Carroll McKinney, 82, of Palestine, Texas are scheduled for 10 am on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at the Culture of Faith Church in Elkhart, Texas with Pastor Clayton Douglas officiating. Graveside will follow at the Land of Memory Cemetery in Palestine, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home in Palestine.
Mr. McKinney died Thursday January 19, 2017 in "Solaris" hospice care at Palestine Regional Medical Center. He was born in Anderson County, Texas November 17, 1934 to Howard Borden McKinney and Gladys Estelle Rea McKinney of Elkhart, Texas. He lived most of his 82 years in Anderson County. He served as a Patrol Officer and Detective Sergeant for the Palestine Police Department for 7 years in the 1960's before opening his own business "Palestine Pawn & Gun Shop, Inc." which he owned and operated for 27 years with his wife and sons. During his life, he was an active member in the community serving as a member in the Palestine Lions Club, President of the Westwood Athletic Booster Club, and was a Sunday School Teacher at Grace Baptist Church. He was an Endowment Life Member of the National Rifle Association, Life Member of Texas State Rifle Association, and worked throughout his life to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, specifically the Second Amendment for future generations. He was most importantly a Christian, who was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He worked hard and sacrificed to provide for his family. He was a man of integrity who showed respect for his fellow man, and expected the same in return.
Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his father Howard B. McKinney, his mother Gladys Estelle McKinney, his two brothers Lester and J.B. McKinney, and one sister Julie Hatfield.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Barbara Ann Bentley McKinney, son Carey G. McKinney and wife Debra of Elkhart, son John K. McKinney and wife Paula of Palestine, son William Howard McKinney and wife Gloria of Plano, grandchildren Amanda Hollingsworth, Casey G. McKinney, Jacob L. McKinney, John K. McKinney Jr., Jason P. McKinney, Joshua W. McKinney, and Hannah L. McKinney, great grandchildren Luke, Rilyn, and Emma Hollingsworth, Kasen "Tate", Coye, and Ava McKinney, Kaitlyn, Parker, and Eden McKinney, Allison McKinney, Josie, Joseph, Joel, and Jescie McKinney.
Pallbearers will be Pon Fincher, Casey McKinney, Jacob McKinney, John McKinney Jr., Jason McKinney, Josh McKinney, Luke Hollingsworth, Rilyn Hollingsworth, and Parker McKinney.
Condolence calls will be received from 6-8 pm on Wednesday January 25, 2017, at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the College Scholarship Fund at Culture of Faith Church (557 Hwy 287, Elkhart, Tx. 75839) or Anderson County Football League (PO Box 1109, Palestine, Tx. 75802).
