Katie's Story

Katie Irene Neel Young went to be with our Lord on Thursday, August 17, 2017, at the Cartmell Home for Aged.
She was born December 3, 1917, to Leslie and Ory Dell Neel in Augusta, Texas.
Katie was a longtime member at Lakeway Baptist Church located in Paris, Texas where she resided for many years. After moving to Palestine in November of 2008, she was affiliated with Norwood Heights Baptist Church.
Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband John Young, her mother Ory Dell Neel and father Leslie Neel, brother Elton Neel and wife Nadine, brother Dale Neel and wife Rachel, daughter Shirley Jean Wells, son Donald Wayne Starkey and wife Susan, son Billy Jack Starkey, nieces Bobbie Barton and Ruth Mitchell, nephew Larry Neel, sister-in-law Nita Neel, and adopted grandson Geoff Parker.
Mrs. Young is survived by her son Jerry Lee Starkey and wife JoAnn of Palestine, daughter-in-law Gail Starkey of Dallas, son-in-law Donald Wells of Palestine, step-daughter Sharon Young of Denver, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 11 great great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Granny Young was truly loved and appreciated by all who knew her.
Katie Irene Young spent many happy hours visiting and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; playing games and reading to them. She enjoyed preparing meals for holidays and on special occasions for her large family. Irene was famous for her delicious potato salad and desserts. She was talented with her crochet needle and sewing machine. She made many items for her friends and family. Irene was quick to pack to go for a visit out of town, to birthday parties, reunions and special holidays. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Matthew Timmons officiating. Burial will follow at Guiceland Cemetery. Condolences calls will be received from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Sunday prior to the funeral services.
