Ann Stewart Skelton
Ann Stewart Skelton passed away in Palestine on October 5, 2019. She was born May 18, 1931 to Lent Olen Stewart and Ora James Stewart in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Ensley High School and attended Huntingdon College and Birmingham-Southern College before marrying Alfred Nicholas Skelton, Jr. in 1951. They were married 54 years until his death in 2005.
The couple lived in Birmingham, Jackson and Memphis before returning to Birmingham in 1963, where Al joined the newly-formed Cosmos Tablet Company. Ann worked as a library volunteer and then as librarian at Shades Cahaba Elementary School from 1966-1968.The family moved to Houston in 1968 and Ann joined Cosmos where she managed the office. The business moved to Palestine in 1977 and continued functioning as Comet School Supplies following a change in ownership. Ann continued to work as office manager until her retirement.
Ann and Al were active members of St. Philip's Episcopal Church of Palestine, where Ann served as church organist for several years in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
The couple moved to Montgomery, Alabama to be close to their daughter and her family, which included their young grandson, in 1993. They returned to Palestine in 2000 in order to be close to friends they had missed during their time in Alabama. Ann was active at St. Philip's and several local organizations and clubs while her health permitted.
Ann is survived by her son, Glenn Stewart Skelton, of Palestine, daughter Dr. Carol Skelton and son-in-law James Opp Smith of Montgomery and grandson Taylor Skelton Smith, currently engaged in graduate study at the University of Illinois.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, November 8, 2019, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Palestine, The Reverend Justin Briggle officiating, with a reception following at the church. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made, if desired, to the local animal shelter, BARC, 335 Armory Road, Palestine TX 75803, or the St. Philip's Scholarship Fund.
