Carol Ann (Owens) Shaw Obituary

Carol Ann (Owens) Shaw of Huntsville, TX passed away peacefully at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX on Friday, August 11, 2023. She was born April 15,1952 in Palestine, TX to Will Richard and Annie (Thomas) Owens. She attended Westwood schools and graduated in 1970.

After high school, Carol earned her B.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences from Sam Houston State University in 1974. During her time in college, Carol pledged Alpha Chi Omega, a school sorority, in spring 1971 and was initiated fall 1971. As a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Carol held many officer positions such as Social Chairman, Warden, and Secretary. After graduating from college, Carol served as Chapter Advisor and in many other advisor roles for the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega.

It was at Sam Houston State that Carol met her husband of 48 years, Doug Shaw of Alvin, Tx. They married on August 9th, 1975, and made their home in Huntsville where Doug coached football at Huntsville High School and served as Assistant Principal at Mance Park Junior High.

In January 1978, Carol joined the staff in the College of Business Administration. In her nearly 35 years working in the College of Business, she served as the secretary for the Accounting Department, Senior Administrative Assistant, and Assistant to the Dean in the COBA Dean's Office. During her tenure at Sam Houston State University, she served on many university committees, planned many parties for the College of Business, and in 1992, she was the recipient of the Staff Excellence Award. Additionally, Carol was so adored by her colleagues that January 30, 2003, was designated Carol Shaw Day on the campus of Sam Houston State University. She loved her job and the people she worked with and often recited the motto, "Choose a job you love and you never have to work a day in your life." Indeed, she would say she chose wisely.

In addition to her service at SHSU, Carol was a staunch advocate for animals. She donated money, resources, and time to Rita B. Huff, Second Hand Pups, and many other rescue organizations and fostered more than 20 puppies throughout the years. Her generosity knew no bounds. There are no words to express how much she was loved by all who knew her with her friendly smile, nurturing spirit, and graceful nature. Her legacy of generosity will endure, however, in the people she encountered and the animals she helped.

Carol was preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her husband, Doug Shaw of Huntsville; daughter Shannon Shaw of San Marcos, TX; son Rusty Shaw of Huntsville, TX, and her fur baby (dog), Sam; brother Gene Owens of Palestine, TX; sisters Cathy Michael of McKinney, TX and Candace Stevens of Oakwood, TX and her many nieces and nephews.

Services are planned for Saturday, August 19 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral home located at 1700 Normal Park Dr., Huntsville, Texas 77340. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00am.

In honor of Carol, please consider making a donation in her name to Second Hand Pups of Livingston, Tx., the Rita B. Huff Humane Society of Huntsville, or to an animal rescue organization of your choosing. Memorial condolences to the family may be made at www.shmfh.com.
