Margaret Thurman Myers
Margaret Thurman Myers was born in Palestine, Texas on September 14, 1925 to N.D. and Prudence Thurman. She passed away on October 12, 2019 at home in Athens, Texas. Margaret grew up in Palestine. After graduating Palestine High School, she went on to Texas Tech University. After returning to Palestine, she met her favorite Aggie, Elton Philip Myers and they were married on July 28, 1949. Elton became Supervising Resident Engineer for the Texas Highway Department over Henderson and Anderson Counties transferring to Athens in 1961.
Mrs. Myers was an active member of the Athens community to say the least. She was a member of the Women's Golf Association of Athens Country Club for many years, serving as president in 1974 when the Lady's Pea Picker and Mary Grant tournaments were established. She served on numerous boards including Athens Chamber 1987-89, Henderson County American Cancer Society 1990-95, Henderson County Hospital Authority 1990-98, City of Athens Parks Board 1989-98, Keep Athens Beautiful 1986-98, and State Board of Keep Texas Beautiful 1991-98. She was awarded for her service with "Athens Citizen of the Year" in 1998. She was also named a "Keep Texas Beautiful Proud Partner" in 1987, and received the prestigious "O.P. Schnabel Award" in 1996. Margaret, with help and prompting from her husband Elton, was partially responsible for starting Keep Athens Beautiful. The Margaret Myers Award has been given annually for many years to the outstanding volunteer of the year.
Margaret was a longtime member of Athens First United Methodist Church where she served on various boards and committees such as the Administrative Board, Council of Ministries, Chairman of Parsonage Committee, and Chairman of the Bereavement Committee. She and Elton were longtime members of their beloved Builders Sunday School Class.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Elton Philip Myers, sister Melza Woodard, and her brother Col. N.D. Thurman, Jr.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Michele Myers Martin and husband Roy, and Sharon Myers Davis; her grandchildren Dana Davis McCormick and husband Jon, James Hull and wife Tara, Darby Davis, Jay Martin and wife Tanie, Katie Martin Jennings and husband Garrett; great-grandchildren Travis McCormick, Philip Martin, Ashlynn Hull, Jason Martin, Addison Jennings, and Wayne Jennings; and nephews Barry, Chris, Steve and David Thurman.
A celebration of her life and memorial service for Margaret will be at 1 pm, Saturday, October 19, 2019, at First United Methodist Church of Athens with Rev. Jason Smith and Rev. Joe Warren officiating. An earlier private family burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Margaret and Elton are together again!
Services are under the direction of Autry's Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
